What UGC means
UGC stands for user-generated content: photos, videos, reviews and posts about a brand made by its customers or fans rather than by the brand itself. A customer filming their skincare routine with your serum, a review with a photo, or a TikTok showing how they use your product are all UGC.
In marketing, "UGC" now also covers content in that style that brands pay for: a creator is hired to film a natural, phone-shot video about the product. Those people are usually called UGC creators, and when the videos run as paid ads they are UGC Ads.
The three kinds of UGC
| Kind | Who makes it | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Organic UGC | Real customers, unpaid | Reposts, reviews on product pages, social proof |
| Creator UGC | Paid UGC creators, often found through marketplaces | Ads, product pages, brand social accounts |
| AI UGC | AI tools: AI script and a realistic AI actor | Fast ad testing with many hooks and angles |
What makes UGC Ads work
UGC Ads look like content from a person, not a brand, so they blend into TikTok, Reels and Shorts feeds instead of reading as a commercial. A typical UGC Ad has four parts:
- Hook in the first seconds: a problem, a bold claim or a question.
- Story or problem: why this person needed the product.
- Proof: the product in use, a result, a specific detail.
- Call to action: what to do next.
Common UGC Ad formats are the talking head (a person speaking to camera, sometimes called a "yapper" ad), the product demo, the unboxing, the before-and-after and the "3 reasons" list.
How much UGC costs
Creator rates vary widely. Two 2026 rate guides:
- Influee puts the average single video between $150 and $212, with a median around $175, and bundles of five or more often discounted.
- JoinBrands puts the overall range at $200 to $3,000 a piece, with most professional creators at $500 to $1,200 a video.
Usage rights (how long and where you can run the video as an ad), raw footage and revisions usually cost extra. AI UGC is priced differently: on EchoUGC a finished video is about $9 to $12 (pricing).

How to get UGC
- Ask customers. Post-purchase emails, review requests with photo or video, and reposting tagged content (with permission).
- Hire UGC creators. Through creator marketplaces or directly. Agree on deliverables, usage rights and revisions up front.
- Generate AI UGC. For ad creative testing, AI tools produce UGC-style videos in minutes. See what AI UGC is and the most-compared AI UGC tools.
UGC rules to know
- Disclose paid content. When a creator is paid or gets free product, the relationship has to be disclosed under FTC endorsement guidance.
- No fake reviews. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials (16 CFR Part 465) bans reviews or testimonials from people who don't exist or have no real experience with the product, including AI-generated ones. AI UGC is fine as an ad; it must not pretend to be a real customer review.
- Get permission before reposting a customer's content or using it in ads.
