- The hook is the first 3 seconds: TikTok says put your proposition there and your hook within 6 seconds.
- Up to 47% of a Meta campaign's value is delivered in the first 3 seconds.
- Six hook types cover most winners: problem, curiosity, result, contrarian, social proof and visual.
- Social proof hooks must use real reviews and real numbers. AI fake testimonials are banned by the FTC.
- Test hooks by keeping one body and swapping five openers, then compare hook rate.
What a hook has to do in 3 seconds
A hook has one job: earn the next few seconds. TikTok's creative guidance says to introduce your proposition in the first 3 seconds and prioritize your hook in the first 6. Meta's numbers show why.
In practice, a good UGC hook does three things at once: it shows a face or the product in frame one, it says something specific to one audience, and it opens a question the rest of the ad answers. Use the brackets below as slots for your product, audience and numbers. First-person lines ("I tried...", "My [thing]...") are for real creators describing their own experience; when an AI actor delivers the hook, rewrite it in presenter voice, because an AI actor should not claim to be a customer.

Problem hooks
Problem hooks work because the viewer self-selects: if they have the problem, they stay.
- If your [problem] gets worse every [day/week], watch this.
- Stop doing [common habit] if you want [outcome].
- I was wasting [time/money] on [task] until I found this.
- Nobody tells you [problem] starts with [cause].
- This is why your [thing] keeps [failing].
- [Audience], your [problem] is not your fault.
- I tried three fixes for [problem]. One worked.
- If you hate [annoying task], this is for you.
- POV: it is [time] and you still have not [done task].
- The [problem] nobody warned me about after [life event].
- Still [doing it the hard way]? There is a faster way.
- My [thing] used to [bad outcome] every single [day].
- Three signs your [thing] needs [fix].
- If [problem] keeps ruining your [moment], keep watching.
- This one mistake is costing you [outcome].
Curiosity hooks
Curiosity hooks open a gap the viewer wants closed. Pay it off within the ad, or the comments will tell you about it.
- I did not expect this to actually [work/fit/last].
- Here is what most [category] ads do not show you.
- Wait until you see what is inside.
- I found the [category] everyone in [community] keeps asking about.
- This is the weirdest [category] I own, and I use it daily.
- You are probably using your [thing] wrong.
- There is a setting on your [thing] most people never touch.
- I tested this so you do not have to.
- The reason I switched from [old way] surprised me.
- Watch what happens when I [action].
- This [product] has one feature I cannot stop using.
- I almost did not post this.
- Here is what [price] actually gets you.
- Guess what this is for.
- Everyone asks me what this is.
Result hooks
Result hooks lead with the payoff. Only use results your product really delivers for typical customers, and stick to what you can show.
- Here is my [task] before and after [product].
- This took my [task] from [old time] to [new time].
- Day [number] of using [product]: honest update.
- How I [outcome] without [sacrifice].
- What [timeframe] of [product] actually looks like.
- What one [use] actually looks like.
- I finally [achieved outcome], here is how.
- This is the fastest way I have found to [outcome].
- [Outcome] in [number] steps.
- This is how [product] [does job] in under [time].
- From [messy state] to [clean state] in one [use].
- My whole [routine] in [number] seconds.
- This replaced [number] things in my [bag/kitchen/stack].
- Here is exactly what I got for [price].
- The [number]-minute fix for [problem].
For health, beauty and supplement products, results need real substantiation, and a "results not typical" line does not fix a misleading claim (FTC Health Products Compliance Guidance). See our guides to skincare and supplement ads.
Contrarian hooks
Contrarian hooks challenge a belief the viewer holds. They pull attention because people want to argue, so make sure the body actually backs the claim.
- Unpopular opinion: you do not need [expensive alternative].
- [Common advice] is wrong, and here is why.
- Stop buying [category] for [wrong reason].
- I am not going to tell you this is perfect.
- Expensive [category] is not always better.
- Everyone says [belief]. I disagree.
- Do not buy this if you [disqualifier].
- Most [category] marketing skips this part.
- [Popular product type] is overrated. Here is what I use instead.
- You do not need [number] steps. You need one.
- Myth: [common myth]. Fact: [true fact].
- I tried the viral [thing]. Here is the truth.
- This is not for everyone, and that is fine.
- The cheapest option is not the cheapest. Let me explain.
- Hot take: [category] should be boring.
Visual hooks: first frame matters
Many people watch without sound; Meta found 41% of videos were basically meaningless without it. Your first frame has to work silently.
- Product in hand, mid-action. The actor is already using it in frame one. EchoUGC's Demo format places your product photo in each scene's opening frame.
- Box already half open. Start an Unboxing ad at the reveal, not the doorstep.
- The mess first. Show the problem state before anyone speaks.
- One bold line of text. A short caption that names the audience, kept away from the edges.
- Movement. An actor walking into frame or a scene change in second one. Try lively movement or a multi-scene Talking ad.

How to test hooks: one body, five openers
Changing everything at once tells you nothing. Keep the body and CTA identical, write five different opening lines, and launch them together in one ad group. TikTok recommends 3 to 5 creatives per ad group, so five hooks fit one test.
Hook (swap one per version): "If your skin feels tight by noon, watch this." / "You are probably applying serum wrong." / "Unpopular opinion: you do not need a ten-step routine."
Body: [Brand] vitamin C serum is lightweight, goes on in one pump, and layers under sunscreen. Here is how it looks going on.
CTA: Tap the link to see the size and price.
Judge by hook rate (3-second views divided by impressions) first, then CTR and cost per result. Once a hook wins, try it on a new body. For test volume by budget, read how many ad creatives to test.
Test hooks in EchoUGC
Hook testing is one of the cheapest wins in paid social, and EchoUGC keeps the cost per test low. A five-hook test with creators means five videos at a typical $150 to $212 each on Influee. In EchoUGC it is five finished ads at about $9 to $12 each, back in minutes.
- Write one brief per hook. Each brief makes one finished video, so put a different opener in each and keep the rest the same.
- Use an idea starter. Problem and fix, myth-busting, objection, contrarian, reveal and "3 reasons" map straight onto the hook types above.
- Keep the same actor. Pick the same saved actor for every version so the face stays constant while the hook changes.
- Keep captions on. Burned-in captions carry the hook for sound-off viewers.
- Download and launch. 1080p 9:16, ready for TikTok, Reels, Shorts and Meta.
Failed renders refund credits automatically, so you only pay for finished ads. Try one video with the $11 first week (it continues on Starter at $49 a month after 7 days unless you cancel), or see pricing. Frequently asked questions
What is a good hook for a UGC Ad?
A good UGC hook names a specific problem or payoff for one audience in the first 3 seconds, with a face or the product visible in the first frame. Problem, curiosity, result, contrarian and real social proof hooks are the most reliable types.
How long should an ad hook be?
About 3 seconds. TikTok says to introduce your proposition in the first 3 seconds and land the hook within 6, and Meta reports up to 47% of campaign value is delivered in the first 3 seconds.
What are the best TikTok ad hooks?
Hooks that feel native: a person talking to camera about a specific problem, a surprising claim they then prove, or the product in use from the first frame. TikTok recommends a DIY look that is not overly polished.
How many hooks should I test?
Start with three to five hooks on the same body so the opener is the only variable. TikTok recommends 3 to 5 creatives per ad group, which fits one hook test.
Can AI write ad hooks?
Yes. EchoUGC writes the script, hook included, from a one-line product description and offers idea starters like problem and fix, myth-busting and contrarian. Put the opener you want in the brief, and check that the finished hook is specific and true for your product.

Social proof hooks (compliant versions)
This is where AI UGC needs the most care. The FTC's 2024 rule bans testimonials that misrepresent that they are by someone who does not exist, such as AI-generated fake reviews. Its Q&A says there is no blanket ban on AI avatars, but the testimonial behind them must not be fake or false. So an AI actor should not claim to be a customer. Let the actor present real proof instead.
Every bracket here must be a real, checkable number, and quoted reviews must be verbatim. General information, not legal advice.
